Domestic Violence Court Systems Project
Project Summary
This project was established to learn about and describe the domestic violence courts within Illinois. This was accomplished by conducting site visits and meeting with individuals involved in the domestic violence courts. The outcomes of the site visits were to learn how the different domestic violence courts originally developed, how they currently operate, and to identify effective procedures and practices. This information is being compiled and put into a document which could be helpful for existing as well as new domestic violence courts.

Another goal of the project is to create a network of domestic violence court system personnel which will facilitate the sharing of information. To this end, the project subcommittee plans to hold a roundtable for domestic violence court system personnel. This will serve as a forum to exchange information and best practices, engage in problem-solving dialogue, and lay a foundation for future networking and information exchanges as it relates to operating and implementing domestic violence court systems.

Another goal of the project is to create a network of domestic violence court system personnel which will facilitate the sharing of information. To this end, the project subcommittee planned and held two roundtables for domestic violence court system personnel. One for counties outside of Cook County and one for Cook County. They served as a forum to exchange information and best practices, engage in problem-solving dialogue, and lay a foundation for future networking and information exchanges as it relates to operating and implementing domestic violence court systems.

The following domestic violence court systems were visited:

  • Kankakee County
  • Will County
  • Lake County
  • Kane County
  • Sangamon County
  • St. Clair County
  • Madison County
