COMMITTEE UPDATES - MARCH 2011

INTERVENTION, PREVENTION, AND EDUCATION COMMITTEE

  • Members expressed their sorrow at learning of Fern Agney's death last month. Tina arranged for a plant to be sent in her memory on behalf of her friends on the Committee and in the Council. Fern will be greatly missed.
  • Child Abuse Awareness Month Kick-Off for the Southern Region will take place at the Edwardsville Courthouse Plaza on 1st April from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The speakers will include Illinois Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon, Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons, and the DCFS Assistant Regional Administrator. A Child Abuse Prevention Community Award will be presented at the event.
  • The Bethalto Boys and Girls Club has opened an after-school programme for 3rd to 12th grade students at the Lovejoy Centre in Brooklyn. This is going well and many students are participating.

  • BOND COUNTY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE COMMITTEE
  • The next meeting is scheduled for May 2011. In the meantime, the Coordinator is working on a resource card for the Bond County community.

  • COMMUNITY FAITH COMMITTEE
  • The Committee assisted Reverend Jame Hahs in presenting the annual Justice Summit that was held at Main Street Methodist Church in Alton on Saturday 19th March 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon.
  • At its monthly meeting, the Committee reviewed the Justice Summit and arranged to meet again in May, specifically to begin planning next year's event.

  • COURT COMMITTEE
  • The Committee learned that 240 orders of protection have been filed so far this year. This is similar to previous years' filings of, on average, 100 per month.
  • The Committee is preparing an updated handout with information on partner abuse intervention programs in Madison County.
  • The Coordinator for Safe From the Start, Erin Wesley, gave a short summary of the services available from the agency for children aged up to 5 years who have been exposed to violence, and their families.

  • GENERAL
  • The Council supplied the Collinsville School District with three hundred packets of information on teen dating violence and other brochures.
  • We also supplied Group Interventions, a perpetrator services agency, with a supply of laminated copies of the Power and Control Wheel. These will be used in counseling sessions.
  • Presentations on domestic violence were given to parents at the GEMS (Girls Excelling at Mathematics and Science) Conference at Lewis and Clark Community College on 19th March, and to students in the SIUE Women's Studies class on 22nd March 2011.
  • The Coordinator attended the Weed and Seed Steering Committee meeting on 16th March and presented the idea of a Walk Against Violence. The Committee members were very supportive and the agencies and organizations represented on the Committee have offered to collaborate in this event.
  • The Council's Spring Training and Luncheon will take place on 26th April at the Moose Lodge in Edwardsville. The presenter is Susan Still, a survivor of domestic violence who has appeared on the Oprah show, and 20/20 with Diane Sawyer.
